Save Our Rivers Society is a registered society organized under the laws of British Columbia, Canada.

ENRON (see movie:  ENRON: the Smartest Guys in the Room)  came to British Columbia in the mid 1980s to buy electricity to feed a US energy crisis they created. ENRON along with the largest accounting company in the world and its consulting business of the same name although disgraced, disbanded and bankrupted the damage it did to  the stability of the US electricity system,   consumers, utilities and governments is still being pursued through the American legal system.

ENRON's smartest guy left early enough to miss financial mess created by ENRON and Arthur Anderson Ltd  through their government approved mark to market accounting system. America's Presidents Bush and ENRON'S Executives Ken Lay and Richard Kinder were suspected of having too close of a relationship. It was a relationship without any comparison. When ENRON came to BC to buy electricity for American consumers who were being panicked by skyrocketing electricity prices created by ENRON's energy traders, they met the people and the politics at BC Hydro the very profitable water driven public utility monopoly owned by the citizens of BC.

GENERAL ELECTRIC, GE BANK was ENRON'S banker.  Upon ENRON'S financial collapse GE'S CEO Jack Welsh said, "We learned a lesson and we will be back stronger than before."  Jack Welsh had lead GE to a growth rate that produced a company ten times larger than it was before the arrival of Mr. Capitalism, Jack Welsh.

British Columbia Hydro Corporation, the publicly owned electricity monopoly that delivers steady reliable cheap electricity and public profits, depending upon the year, of $500 million to almost a billion dollars a year. BC has only two large private power facilities which were approved to bring business, jobs and taxes to a remote areas of BC. The Nechako River in Kitimat was harnessed to make power for aluminum smelting giant ALCAN while a major river near Trail powers the lead and zinc smelters of Tech Cominco. The two companies can put the hydro power they make to their business use or they can sell power only to BC Hydro.

Kitimat, its town and people, have had ten years of experience in seeing what a global corporation can do when it wants something that does not belong to them and something the law says it can't have.

Save Our Rivers Society was formed by citizens from communities being affected by another manufactured energy crisis. The BC Energy Plan was created to respond to the BC energy crisis. The government that implemented it is still the ruling government in BC.  By the time some of BC's citizens were able to catch up tp what was really going on with our rivers there were about ten rivers in development as private run river power projects.  Almost all of these projects were located in remote areas that saw very little pubic interest.

As the rights of the people of British Columbia began to be removed to give corporations easier access to our rivers people from Pemberton and Squamish decided to do what the government would not. They decided to get together to tell the people of BC what was going on.  After several informal names Save Our Rivers Society was formed by these same citizens.
