Rafe Mair Speech at Historic Upper Pitt Meeting
Wednesday, 26 March 2008 09:13

In a radio spot recorded one week earlier, Rafe Mair urged the public to "bring your noisemaker to the Pitt fight." Last night at Pitt Meadows High, the people responded. It was a historic occasion for the citizens of BC, as the audience of 1,200 strong--with others turned away at the door--rose up in unison to say no to the proposal to run power lines through Pinecone-Burke Park and convert all eight tributaries of the pristine Upper Pitt River to private power production. And leading the charge was the voice familiar to many in what was undoubtedly one of his finest hours. Watch the full speech by Rafe Mair that brought the people to their feet and a private power proposal to its knees.

And in the words of Rafe, "When--not if--we win the fight for the Pitt, we must then take the spirit of the Pitt right around the province and rally decent people against an indecent government. We must stay the course. It's no good just being here--you've got to be everywhere, either yourselves or with your friends, all around the province. And we will save the other rivers and streams, just as we will save the Pitt."

Welcome Rafe Mair to the battle to save our rivers. And congratulations to the people who are making their voices heard and winning the battle.

"Blue Gold Rush" is a documentary aired by CTV in the First Story series. Description from the CTV site: "Over the last few years the BC Liberal government has been quietly leasing the rights to many of province's rivers and streams to private power developers. Hundreds of rivers in First Nation traditional territories may be diverted for new private power projects. The Union of BC Indian Chiefs is calling for a moratorium on all development on B.C.'s rivers and streams. How do these projects affect First Nations rights, culture, fish habitats and environment?"
